Traveling from Kyoto Station to Nara

Two train lines connect Kyoto Station with Nara: the JR Nara Line and the Kintetsu Kyoto Line. The best route depends on your ticket and where you want to arrive in Nara. Use JR if you have a Japan Rail Pass or are connecting from JR or shinkansen platforms at Kyoto Station. Use Kintetsu if you do not have a Japan Rail Pass and want to arrive closer to Nara’s central sightseeing area around Kintetsu Nara Station.

Kyoto Station to Nara

JR Nara Line

On the JR Nara Line, the Miyakoji Rapid train is the fastest JR service between Kyoto Station and JR Nara Station. It usually takes about 45-50 minutes and is the most straightforward choice for Japan Rail Pass holders.

However, be careful when boarding. There are 21 stations on the JR Nara Line, and local trains stop at many more of them. If you are going all the way to Nara, check that you are boarding a Miyakoji Rapid or another suitable rapid service. Local trains can take around 70 minutes.

If you do not have a Japan Rail Pass, the Kintetsu Kyoto Line is often the better practical choice. Within Nara city, Kintetsu Nara Station is more centrally located than JR Nara Station and has better access to the main sightseeing locations.

Ordinary Kintetsu express routes between Kyoto and Kintetsu Nara cost 760 yen and usually take around 45-55 minutes, depending on the departure and whether you need to transfer at Yamato-Saidaiji.

Kintetsu Limited Express services can be faster and all seats are reserved, but they require a limited express ticket in addition to the basic fare. In current daytime route results, typical limited-express options take about 40-42 minutes and cost at least 1,280 yen in total. Premium trains such as Shimakaze cost more. Check the Kintetsu route/fare search for the exact departure, transfer, and surcharge before choosing this option.

For more detailed information on the Kintetsu Line service see the Kintetsu Kyoto Line article.
