Traveling from Kyoto to Kobe

Traveling from Kyoto to Kobe

If you are traveling to Kobe from central Kyoto and you are already near Shijo-Kawaramachi or Shijo-Karasuma, the private Hankyu Kyoto Line can be a useful alternative to starting from Kyoto Station. From Kyoto-kawaramachi or Karasuma Station, take a Hankyu Kyoto Line limited express to Juso Station and transfer there to the Hankyu Kobe Line for Hankyu Kobe-sannomiya. The trip takes about 65-70 minutes and costs 640 yen. It is slower than taking the JR Kyoto Line from Kyoto Station, but it can be cheaper and more convenient if you are beginning in central Kyoto. Remember that Hankyu Railway is not covered by the Japan Rail Pass.

For travelers starting at Kyoto Station, the easiest route to central Kobe is the Special Rapid train on the JR Kyoto Line, which continues toward Kobe on the JR Kobe Line. This direct service gets you to JR Sannomiya Station in about 51 minutes for a fare of 1,110 yen. It is faster than the Hankyu route and is the better choice if you want to arrive in the main Sannomiya area without changing trains.

If you have a Japan Rail Pass and Shin-Kobe Station is convenient for your plans, the shinkansen can be faster than the conventional-line route, with some trains taking around 30 minutes from Kyoto to Shin-Kobe. However, NOZOMI and MIZUHO trains require a special additional ticket even for Japan Rail Pass holders, while HIKARI and KODAMA options may have different timings. Shin-Kobe Station is north of central Sannomiya, so for central Kobe the direct Special Rapid to JR Sannomiya is often simpler.
